Irony:the use of words to convey a meaning that is the opposite of its literal meaning
Metaphor: A figure of speech in which an implied comparison is made between two unlike things that actually have something in common.
1.) Karel left made a week or so later, and his words made my heart soar. ~This is a metaphor because her heart was not literally "soar" it is just stating that she was extremely sad.
2.) My head throbbed, my joints were on fire. ~This is a metaphor because her joints were not actually on fire, this just means that she was in extreme pain and her joints hurt very badly. Monica- You have the right definition, but a metaphor is a comparison without using 'like' or 'as' . Something is something else. For example, The sky is a fire, melting the fog. The sky is being compared to a fire, but 'like' or 'as' is not stated. Stereotype:a commonly held public belief about specific social groups,
1.) In this time period it was thought that all Jews were terrible people. ~This is a stereotype because they are just assuming that every things was to be blamed on the Jewish community, even though they had done nothing.
2.) Also during this time period it was thought that all people with Blonde hair and blue eyes were superior. ~This is a stereotype because people were also just assuming that those types of people were far better than others, like Jews. Good. Allusion: A reference
Personification: is giving human traits to non-living objects
1.) I was following Mama and Nollie up a dark, straight flight of stairs where cobwebs clutched at our hair. Page 28 ~This is personification because clutching is a human characteristic and cobwebs are not a human. Therefore cobwebs cannot clutch.
2.)For a while curiosity and terror struggled in me. Page 28 ~This is personification because curiosity and terror can't struggle .
MONICA- EXCELLENT EXAMPLES OF PERSONIFICATION. Symbolism: representing things by symbols, or of investing things with a symbolic meaning or character.
1.) The golden stars that all Jews were forced to wear on their clothing. ~This is symbolism because it was a symbol for people to know who was Jewish and who was not.
2.) The Swastika ~This is symbolism because it was the symbol for Nazism and all Nazis wore this on their uniforms and it was on the flags.

7. Due date: Wednesday, May 5
8. Put assignment on your individual WIKI page. Label it Assignment #2.
CORRIE TEN BOOM - Internal Conflict: Occurs when the main character struggles within himself or herself. 1.) She loves Karel but can't tell him that.
Corrie knows that she loves Karel and she has a pretty good idea that he loves her back, but she knows she can never tell him how she really feels about him because they have a great age difference and his mother wants him to find someone different. This makes Corrie extremely hurt because she loves him so much and she always has, and she is even more hurt when Karel is engaged.
2.) When Corrie is little she decides that she does not wish to go to school.
When Corrie was very young, she would stay at home while her sisters went to school everyday. She would stay at the Beje and help mama and the other tantes with housework and other things that needed to be done. When she became old enough to attend school, she was supposed to have left for her first day of school, but she decided she still wanted to stay home and help around the house and not go to school. Her family did not approve of this and she was walked to school by Papa.
3.) She is sad when she sees Karel is engaged.
Since Corrie and Karel had become extremely close when they were together, her love for him had grown even more. From the first time Corrie laid eyes on Karel she had fallen in love, and that was when she was very young. Corrie was so madly in love with Karel that she could barely speak to him! As they became closer, they started writing and Corrie really thought they would get married someday. The next time they were together
External Conflict:is a struggle between a character and his or her surroundings or between two 1.) Corrie was laying in her bed and Holland started getting bombed, so the war started.
Holland had remained neutral the entire war, but one night Corrie was laying in her bed and she could hear huge bombing rades on Holland. This started the war because Holland surrendered leading to Nazis occupying all of Holland. Since Nazis were in control of Holland, people(Jews) would disappear and no one would exactly know where they went. Then people would be taken away on trains/cars, but all of these people were Jews who the Nazis persecuted.
2.) Corrie's mother goes into a coma and becomes very ill when she gets up 3 months later.
Corrie's mother had been sick for a while and could not work very well and do her normal hospitality to the poor because of this. She would always become more and more ill until one day she was doing the dishes when she collapsed. She was put in her bed and the doctor said she was in a coma and would wake up eventually. This problem is solved because three months later she wakes up, but ends up dying a couple months after she woke up.
3.) Tante Bep gets diabetes and Corrie has to take a blood test for her every day.
Tante Bep would always have a terrible cough and was always extremely ill as well. She became so sick that the doctor came to check out what was wrong; they figured out that she had diabetes, which back then when you figured out you had that you were going to die. She was given medicine and a weekly blood test that Corrie had to take for her. She had to do everything completely right; the color of the test was supposed to turn out clear and if it became black Corrie was to tell the doctor right away. One day the test turned out black; Corrie did not want to believe it so she retraced the steps she took to create it and sadly she had not done anything wrong. The doctor came and said that tante Bep would die in only a matter of time, and she did.
KAREL - Internal Conflict:
1.) He knows he is hurting Corrie by getting married.
Ever since Corrie was young she had a strong love for her brother's friend Karel. Later on when they are both older, they begin to talk more, write to each other, and even nowadays we would call it "Hang out". Corrie and Karel took a walk together the day before they would leave eachother and Karel had told Corrie to right to him about everything that was going on at the Beje. Corrie really thought that they were in love and that they would be together forever. The next time they see each other, Karel brings another woman and tells Corrie that they are engaged and will be married. He knows that this is breaking Corrie's heart.
2.) He can't be in love with Corrie because she is much younger than him.
Corrie and Karel are about eight years of age apart. They know that they are in love but they cannot be together because of their huge difference in age. Even when they are older and the difference does not seem as great, she is far too young for him and he needed to find someone closer to him in age.
3.) Karel likes Corrie but he is engaged to be married.
Karel and Corrie became very close and felt that they both loved each other. Corrie would write to him while he was gone and he would write back, but not as often as she wrote. They ended up drifting farther and farther apart and he would very seldom write back to her. When he showed up at the Beje to visit, he was already engaged to be married to another woman.
External Conflict:
1.) Karel's mother wants him to do something certain with his life ( Don't exactly know yet )
Karel is not allowed to exactly pick the girl he wishes to marry because his mother wants him to specifically do something with his life. After Karel and Corrie get very close Willem asks Corrie if she thinks this will be serious and indeed she did. He stated that they cannot be together because Karel's mother would be heartbroken. This is why he asks the other woman to marry him.
2.) He goes on walks with Corrie and loves her and she loves him but they cannot be together.
Corrie and Karel would go on walks together every single day when they were together. This made both of them happy because they were very much in love, but they would not be together forever because again of the age difference and Karel's mother's expectations of him and what she wanted him to do with his life. Corrie is completely heart broken when they are done and he is already engaged to someone else.
3.) The bulldog man kills his dogs because he does not have enough food for each of the dogs and himself due to rationing and food coupons.
When Corrie and Papa would go on their daily walks they would see the exact same people every single day. One of the people they would see was the man with the bulldogs that actually looked somewhat like a bulldog as well. One day while they were walking, they of coarse saw the bulldog man, but for some reason he did not have the bulldogs. He was obviously Jewish because he wore a golden star patch on his clothing. They followed him into his store and asked him if his dogs were well. He said that he had drugged their food for the reason that he did not have enough food for all of them and himself.

Children usually joined the Nazi groups at about age 10. They taught children only of Nazism and that Hitler was the messiah and their savior. This fit into Hitler's plan for a perfect world because his idea for a perfect world was no Jews, strong people, people with blond hair and blue eyes, and every one believe that he is the leader of the world; these groups taught youth to believe in this perfect world too so they could create it.
